LAP Adjustable Gastric
Banding (LAGB)
This procedure involves placing an inflatable band
around the top of the stomach that acts to
restrict
the amount you would be able to eat. This band is
connected to a reservoir that is located under the skin
at the abdominal wall. In your follow-up visits we will
determine if you are losing weight effectively, and if
not we can place more fluid in the band, further
restricting how much you are able to eat. This
operation is newer, and as a result there are fewer
long-term studies available, but it has reportedly
produced 40-60% loss of excess body weight.
This procedure is performed under general anesthesia,
and is usually performed using a minimally invasive
approach (laparoscopically). The hospitalization is
overnight and return to work would be in 1–2 weeks.
After the surgery you would be expected to follow the
dietary recommendations we give you, take the vitamin
supplements, and keep your follow-up appointments. You
will need to crush any pills you take.
Anti-inflammatory medications (e.g. Motrin, aspirin,
Advil) are not to be used since they may cause serious
pouch ulceration.
This procedure has minimal risk, but as with any surgery
complications can occur. Long-term problems with band
erosion or slippage can occur in 1-5%. The
complications are rarely life-threatening, but may
involve reoperation. The band can be removed, replaced,
or one could proceed with Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The
reversibility, adjustability, and low risk may make this
procedure a good choice for you.
When we meet with you in the office we will determine if
this operation will meet your needs. If you decide to
proceed we will seek approval from your insurance
provider, and then meet with you again to schedule the
date for the operation. This process may take several
months, but it offers you a lifetime of change.
